Cassava can keep you food secure

Cassava is one of the major food crops in Uganda and Africa in general. Besides that, cassava is a major component in animal feed as well as a key ingredient in the industrial production of several things including medicine and alcohol. This month we started to harvest the cassava we planted in May 2017. The yield is excellent.

Cassava is among crops that are drought tolerant and should therefore be considered by farmers who want to secure their food supply throughout the year. We planted plenty so some we are already cooking and eating, some we shall dry for future consumption, and the surplus we are to sell.

It is important for a smallholder farmer to keep at least a few animals. Apart from their direct value as sources of meat or revenue, these animals contribute manure necessary for soil fertility and plant growth.
